"Still Life" Exhibit on Display during 5 Dutch Days

Trespa I Arpa Design Centre New York

Date: 15 Nov 2010/10:00 am
Type: Exhibit

During this November’s annual 5 Dutch Days, which celebrates the ongoing influence of Dutch culture in New York City, the Trespa Design Centre will host Still Life, an exhibition uniting the jewelry and furniture designs of Netherlands-born Alissia Melka-Teichroew (1976) of New York studio byAMT and portraits of them made by Eindhoven-based artist Lisa Klappe (1979).

Melka-Teichroew’s Jointed Jewels co-opts the automobile industry’s Selective Laser Sintering technology to create Cartier, Bulgari and Victorian-inspired jewelry based on the ball joint, a part typically found in cars and hip replacements. The high-tech Jewels will be accompanied by her low-tech Peasant furniture collection, which also recalls traditional design. ByAMT’s objects will be arranged in vignettes in front of still life photographs of them by Klappe and mounted on framed easels, each pair enriching the translation beside it. Standing at various heights, calibrated to the scale of the physical objects they describe, the large-scale photographs will form a swaging terrain that may be a land or cityscape of images and objects.

The two bodies of work are finely matched since the pragmatic approach of each woman often results in works that are richly ambiguous and equivocal. Klappe’s canvas-sized photos are simultaneously colorful and darkly evocative, serene and obscene, personally confrontational and filmic. It is no surprise then that the exhibition’s Louvre-like profusion of artwork will suggest the atelier of an Old Master, where still-life’s are arranged directly in front of the canvas on which they are being painted, offering a tantalizing comparison of life and art, or art and art, as the case may be.
